Novato Fire District is currently accepting plan submittals electronically.

Required items for electronic plan submittals: 

1. Submit plans via email: prevention@novatofire.org.
2. In the SUBJECT line, include job address and permit type.
3. All attached files must be in a PDF format.
4. Permit application, plans, hydraulic calculations and specifications sheets must be attached as a separate file and properly labeled.
   • NFD Permit application (required)
   • Hydraulic Calculations
   • Plans
   • Specification sheets (all supporting documents required)
5. A billing email is required (person responsible for payment), used for invoicing.
6. Plans, Fire Jurisdiction Transmittal Form (County Projects Only) can be submitted in PDF via email: prevention@novatofire.org.

• Plan review fees will be invoiced once we have received the complete submittal.
• Incomplete submittals will not be accepted.
• Plan reviews will not be released until payment has been received.
• Applicants shall be notified by email when your plan review has been completed.
• The plan review process and issuance of a fire construction permit may take approximately 14 days.
• Payment accepted via check (payable to Novato Fire District) or invoiced (via authorize.net). 
• Please mail checks payable to Novato Fire Protection District ATTN: Fire Prevention, 95 Rowland Way, Novato, CA 94945. 
• USPS (mail) or FedEx or a Lockbox for drop-off Plan Submittal is still available.

Note: Delivery via e-mail is subject to the size of the file(s) based on your e-mail server limitations. For larger files, applicant shall provide Permit Technician access to applicant’s drop-box or deliver files on USB Flash drive.

Paper Submittal Required Items:

1. Permit application
2. Three (3) sets of plans (if NMWD requires an approved Fire District stamped set of plans, it will be the responsibility of the submitter to provide another set) 
3. Hydraulic calculation
4. Supplemental documentation

The Fire Code Official is authorized to receive applications, review construction documents, and issue permits for construction regulated by the fire code, issue permits for operations regulated by the fire code, inspect premises for which such permits have been issued, and enforce compliance with provisions of the fire code.

The Novato Fire District requires a permit and approved plans for all work conducted on fire protections systems, fire services underground, pre-engineered systems, tent, and canopy installation, to name a few. Refer to the permit form on required types and fees.

There are two types of permits:

• Operational Permit:
  • Allows the applicant to conduct an operation or a business for which a permit is required for either a prescribed period of time, or until renewed or revoked.

• Construction Permit:
  • Allows the applicant to install or modify systems or equipment for which a permit is required.

A full submittal includes:

• A completed permit application
• Payment of fees at time of submittal, by check or invoiced with proper billing email.
  • For electronic submittals, you will be invoiced.
• Three (3) sets of drawings (only for paper submittals) and supporting documents (cut sheets, calcs, manufacturer spec sheets, SFM approval/listing sheets, etc.)
  • Partial submittals not containing all required info will not be accepted.

• Plan reviews require a minimum of ten (10) working days to review after the permit application has been processed.
