The Marin County Civil Grand Jury is an independent investigative body composed of nineteen citizens charged with monitoring the performance of local government. It is empowered by the judicial system in Marin County under California State Law.

The Grand Jury is part of the judicial branch of government and has three functions:

  • To examine all aspects of city and county governments and special districts by initiating its own investigations.
  • To serve as ombudsmen for the citizens of the cities and county.
  • To conduct criminal investigations and, if the evidence is sufficient, issue criminal indictments in lieu of a preliminary Superior Court hearing.

The Novato Fire District fully supports the mission of the Civil Grand Jury and works diligently to ensure full transparency with our constituents to ensure the Fire District is performing well as a public agency.
